Carol Hann, 44-year-old mother from Plymouth Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, has been accused of years long sexual abuse and incest with her son, beginning when the boy was 8-year-old.
Hann is charged with rape of a child, corruption of minors, endangering the welfare of children and incest. The boys father, Robert Caravella, is charged with conspiracy to commit rape of a child, corruption of minors, endangering the welfare of children and distributing explicit sexual material to minors.
According to the victim, his introduction to pornography when he was 7-year-old evolved into thrice weekly viewings with his father, designed to familiarize him with sexual intercourse. His father called him over to the family computer and told him to watch the video playing on the screen. There were naked women, the boy said, and naked men. They were having sex. On his eighth birthday, the boy said, his father led him to an upstairs bedroom at their Plymouth home and demanded he have sex with his mother. "He had been building me up to it."
Authorities said one of the reasons the abuse was able to continue unnoticed for so long is that the boy did not attend a traditional school. After first grade, he was enrolled in a cyber school, taking classes online from a computer in his room. Authorities said the abuse continued until Aug. 19, 2010, when police arrived at the couple's Gould Street, Plymouth, home after Luzerne County Children and Youth Services received a report of a child living in "deplorable" conditions. That was the same day two girls revealed to police that Caravella molested them on numerous occasions from 2002 to 2005. Caravella faces separate charges in that case.
After his eighth birthday, the boy said, he and his mother fell into a routine of sex as much as four times a week. Each time, he said, "she'd start by taking her clothes off and I'd follow.". The boy did not realize the encounters with his mother were wrong or criminal until four years later, when a shocked foster parent told him she would not require him to have intercourse.
Caravella and Hann, testifying Thursday afternoon, denied showing the boy pornography or forcing him to have sex with her. Hann described herself as a "good Christian woman" and blamed a "bunch of backstabbers" in her family for compelling the boy to make false allegations against her and her husband. The boy said Hann told him not to tell anyone about the conduct, and that sometimes she would force him to have sexual contact with him.
The boy said he hid the abuse from police and therapists at first, because he "didn't want to get them in trouble." "I felt protective over my parents," the boy said. "I loved them."
The boy was temporarily put in foster care, and then transferred to live with an aunt and uncle, with whom he is still living.
Despite incest being one of the most universal cultural taboos in world history (right up there with cannibalism!), people sure seem to like incest in fiction fiction. In folklore, where the Greek and Egyptian pantheons are founded on incestuous couples, and incestuously romantic or born heroes abound, not to mention all the examples (or near examples) from the Bible. Incest cases reported on this site have also been the most read among the site visitors.

Tessa Vervlerah, 22-year-old woman from Balwin (St. Louis County), Missouri, pleaded guilty to incest, statutory sodomy and statutory rape of her infant daughter along with a California man she met online, and was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison. Along with hundreds of child porn images on Kyle's computers, investigators found information that led them to the St. Louis area, where Kyle had visited Vanvlerah four times in five months since meeting online. During those visits, prosecutors say the pair had sex with the girl and each other at various hotels. The girl is now 3 but who was 5 months old when the pair first attacked her. The woman who fostered and then adopted the girl said initially, the girl would scream when anyone bathed her or changed her diaper. She still has night terrors and asks at each bedtime to make sure nobody else comes into the home.
